Kittle returns to lead local sports coverage

Kittle

ELKINS — Joey Kittle has been introduced as the new sports editor of The Inter-Mountain, returning to the newspaper where he covered sports for more than 20 years.

A Barbour County native, Kittle worked for The Inter-Mountain from 1992 to 2014, serving as the sports editor for much of that time and winning numerous West Virginia Press Association first-place awards along the way.

“I’m very thrilled to be back with The Inter-Mountain as the sports editor,” Kittle said. “It is my hope and goal to provide the best possible sports coverage, from the youth ranks to the college level, and rely on my 25 years of experience in this profession to give our readers a great outlet to keep updated on their favorite professional, college, high school or youth league team.”

With Kittle taking the helm of the sports department, The Inter-Mountain is seeking to increase and improve its local sports coverage.

“The readers of The Inter-Mountain should feel very fortunate to have Joey back on board,” said Inter-Mountain Publisher Steve Herron. “Joey’s previous 20-plus year history with The Inter-Mountain made him the logical choice to bring back, and the timing of Joey’s return couldn’t have been any better.

“Unfortunately, over the last year I have had many parents of high school kids call me wanting to know why we weren’t publishing photos and stories of their kids. While some of our stringers (independent contractors) were able to cover some events, there were a lot of games/matches where our coverage just came up short,” he said. “Through Joey’s efforts and coordination our readers should see an immediate improvement of our overall coverage throughout our region.

“I hope the loyal readers of The Inter-Mountain embrace the changes that have already taken place and reach out to Joey with any suggestions on what they feel will improve our sports reporting.”

Kittle’s experience and expertise will lead The Inter-Mountain’s coverage of teams and sporting events throughout Randolph, Barbour, Upshur, Tucker and the surrounding counties.

“Joey Kittle’s return to The Inter-Mountain as the full-time sports editor is going to greatly improve our sports coverage,” said Inter-Mountain Executive Editor Brad Johnson. “You may have already seen him at last week’s Hillbilly Hardball games, and he’ll be a familiar presence courtside and on the sidelines to photograph and write about our local athletes’ accomplishments.”

The Inter-Mountain is reaching out to its readers for suggestions about how better to cover local sports.

“I welcome any input from our readership, and I thank The Inter-Mountain Publisher Steve Herron and Executive Editor Brad Johnson for this great opportunity,” Kittle said.
