Elkins High soccer teams garner wins over Lincoln
ELKINS — The Elkins High School boys soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Lincoln Thursday night in Big 10 Conference play at EHS Field.
The Tigers improved to 4-3-1 overall and 2-2 in Big 10 games.
“It was a good win for us,” EHS second-year coach Michael Sfameni said. “We are dealing a lot of injuries right now and the boys really stepped up their games tonight.”
Senior Liam Gongola and junior Devan Fletcher tallied the scores for the Tigers, who will remain home at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to face North Marion for another league encounter.
Elkins 9, Lincoln 0
The Elkins girls, ranked second in the latest WVHSSCA Class AA-A ratings, stayed perfect on the season in Thursday’s nightcap, posting a 9-0 win over Lincoln.
The Lady Tigers (7-0) will now entertain No. 1-ranked Winfield at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
“Winfield will certainly be our biggest test to date,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said.
Elkins jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead against the Cougars on Thursday, which was a change, according to Cutright.
“Over the years we’ve got off to slow starts against Lincoln,” Cutright said. “We challenged the girls before the game to get off to a good start and they did just that.”
Isabella Karlen tallied four goals, three coming in the first half, to lead the EHS scoring.
Susan Riggleman added a pair of goals, while Sofia Triplett, Kiley Kalain and Hannah Haddix added one goal each.
Taylor Phillips recorded the shutout in goal and also stopped a Cougar penalty kick.
