Philip Barbour Homecoming Court honored

PHILIPPI — The 2018 Philip Barbour Homecoming Court was honored prior to a home football game over the weekend on George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park. The queen and maid of honor were chosen from a group of five senior princesses with votes from PBHS senior athletes.

Anna Ruf was crowned the 2018 PBHS Homecoming Queen by Principal Ron Keener, and Haleigh White was named Maid of Honor while receiving her sash and flowers from Associate Principal Tonya Ferguson.

“Philip Barbour Takes All” was the homecoming week slogan to go with a casino theme. Spirit Week included a pep rally, a parade and tons of Philip Barbour pride as the student council sponsored several activities. Council members include president Zoe Payne, vice president Kiara Harris, secretary Jordan McGee, treasurer Maela Carr, sergeant at arms Skylar Beohm, historian Payton Gregory, parliamentarian Olivia Zinn and public relations director Sarah Poling. The council’s advisors are Gerald Furby and Allyson McNaboe.

Each Homecoming Princess was nominated by their classmates, and were escorted by a person of their choice who they feel has made a significant difference in their life.

Retired Barbour County Schools administrator Doug Schiefelbein introduced the court over the public address system, and freshman Loryn Harris led off as the first court member announced. Harris is the daughter of Tracy Hicks and DJ Harris of Moatsville. She participates in both volleyball and softball, and enjoys reading, painting, drawing and taking care of her dogs in her free time. After high school, she plans to attend college to become an interior designer. Escorting Loryn was her aunt, Collette Kimble.

Next up was freshman Audrey Williams, the daughter of Blake and Amy Williams of Belington. She is a member of the Philip Barbour High School lady Colts soccer team, a member of Faith Way Baptist Church’s youth group, a member of Philip Barbour’s Health Occupations Services of America (HOSA) chapter, and serves as a student council representative. Williams enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing soccer, traveling and photography. She plans to attend college and become either a physical therapist, or a nurse specializing in pediatrics, and was escorted by her father.

Sophomore Sarah Poling took to the field next. She is the daughter of Rick and Diane Poling. She serves as Student Council Public Relations Director, and is a member of the theatre class. In her free time, she enjoys singing, playing instruments and acting. In the future, Sarah plans to attend college and major in early childhood education, and minor in theatre and music. Poling was escorted by her father.

The other sophomore princess was Braylynn Travis, the daughter of Brandon and Tonya Travis of Philippi. She is a member of the Lady Colts soccer team, an FC33 Soccer Club member, participated in the Olympic Development Soccer Program, and the Tri-State Soccer Club. Braylynn plans to attend college to play soccer, while pursuing a career in physical therapy. Travis was escorted by her father.

Representing the junior class was Maela Carr, the daughter of Billie Jean and Steve Hunt of Belington, and Mahlon Carr of Montrose. She is a member of the Philip Barbour High School Lady Colts soccer team, the president of the Philip Barbour Future Business Leaders of America Chapter, the vice president of Pep Club, the treasurer of Philip Barbour’s Student Council, and a member of the Foreign Language Club, Natural Helpers, and Philip Barbour Young Life. Maela enjoys sleeping, adventuring, bible study, coon hunting and spending time with family and friends in her free time. In the future, she plans to attend West Virginia University to pursue an undergraduate degree in english, and go on to attend law school there as well in hopes of practicing family law. Carr was escorted by her mother.

Somer Kerr, the daughter of Lisa Crites of Philippi, was the other 11th-grade princess. She is a three-year member of the Pride of Barbour County Philip Barbour High School marching band, a ten-year member and three-year teacher at Cheri’s Dance Studio, co-president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), a member of New Life Family Worship Center, as well as their youth group and praise team, and is a member of Upward Bound. She enjoys dancing, playing the saxophone, cooking, baking, writing, listening to music, shopping and spending time with family and friends. In the future, Somer wishes to attend West Virginia University to major in Early Childhood Education, and minor in music. Kerr was escorted by her uncle, Jim Marshall.

Skylar Beohm, the daughter of Kim Jennings and Seth Beohm of Philippi, was the first senior princess introduced. She is a majorette in the Phillip Barbour High School Band, Philip Barbour Student Council’s Sergeant at Arms, a member of Key Club and National Honors Society, and a member of the tennis team. She enjoys twirling and playing tennis. Her future plans include receiving a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine. Beohm was escorted by PB Band Director Victor Iapalucci.

Representing the senior class next was Summer Harris, the daughter of Jerry Johnson and Nichol Harris of Philippi. She is a member of the Philip Barbour High School Band, Key Club, TSA, and FCA. Outside of school, Summer enjoys shopping, sleeping and hanging out with friends. Her future plans include attending WVU to study pharmaceuticals. Escorting Harris was her father, Jerry Johnson.

Up next was senior Jenna Poling, the daughter of Jennifer Poling and the late Phillip Poling of Belington. She is a member of Philip Barbour Lady Colt’s soccer team and the PB Band. In her free time she enjoys riding horses, reading, sleeping, playing with her dogs, and spending time with Levi. Her future plans are to attend college. Poling was escorted by her grandpa, Bill Foy.

Ruf, the daughter of Eric and Jana Ruf of Belington, was introduced next. She is a twirler and saxophonist for the Philip Barbour Band, class president for the past three years, Key Club President, Student Council Representative, a member of national Honors Society, a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and choir, and an attendee of Rhododendron Girl’s State. She enjoys singing, twirling, traveling and spending time with friends and family. Her future plans include attending college to get a master’s degree in secondary mathematics education. Ruf was escorted by her father.

Last but not least to represent the PBHS Class of 2018 was White, the daughter of Alison White of Belington and Vince Schoonover of Philippi. She is a member of the Philip Barbour Lady Colt’s soccer, swim and tennis teams, and a twirler for the Philip Barbour band. In the future she plans to attend WVU to study forensic science after attending basic training for the U.S. Army Military Police. White was escorted by her stepfather, Vince Schoonover.

Helping out with carrying flowers were minor court members Caroline Johnson, and Jasiah Dalton. Johnson is the daughter of Charlie and Heather Johnson of Belington. She attends the Weaver Church of the Nazarene and is a kindergarten student. In her free time, she enjoys dancing at the Dance Factory and playing with her barbies. In the future, Caroline wants to be on her pappy’s firefighting team. Dalton is the son of TJ and Trista Dalton of Belington. He attends Junior Elementary School, where he is in kindergarten. Jasiah enjoys playing outside, swimming, arguing with his brother Hayden, and watching movies. In the future, he wants to be a Youtuber and a dad.

Carrying the sashes and the queen’s crown were Madison Hart and Asa Mayle, respectively. Hart is the daughter of Danielle Hart and Brian Bulatko of Belington. She attends Belington Elementary School, where she is in first grade. Madison enjoys fighting with her brother Griffin. She attends the Weaver Church of the Nazarene, dances at Dance by Farrah, and is a Clover Bud in the Tacy Stickers 4-H Club. Hart wants to be a mermaid when she grows up. Mayle is the son of Nick and Whitney Mayle of Philippi. He enjoys playing with his monster trucks, fishing, wrestling, playing outside, swimming and getting muddy. Asa plans on wrestling, playing football and being a police officer when he grows up. Mayle’s father helped coach the Colts to a 27-21 win over Liberty on homecoming night for Philip Barbour.
