Candidates file on first day for municipal election
ELKINS — Monday served as the first day for candidate filing for the Elkins municipal election, with the mayor’s position as well as a seat in each of the five city council wards to be on the ballot.
Elkins Mayor Van Broughton was the first person to file Monday morning, seeking his fourth term as mayor. Mayoral terms run two years.
The five city council seats up for grabs are currently held by Bob Woolwine, first ward; Gene Ochsendorf, second ward; Christopher Lowther, third ward; Marilynn Cuonzo, fourth ward; and Linda Vest, fifth ward. Council terms run four years.
By the end of the business day Monday, incumbent council members Woolwine, Cuonzo and Vest had filed for another term.
If re-elected, this will be the third, four-year term for Woolwine and Cuonzo, and the second term for Vest. Woolwine and Cuonzo were both appointed mid-term, originally.
Also on Monday, Elkins residents Carrie Shupp filed to run for the second ward seat and Robin Spicer filed to run for the fifth ward seat.
The Elkins municipal election will take place March 5 at Elkins City Hall.
The filing period will end at midnight on Nov. 16.
