College hosting Health and Justice Symposium

ELKINS — Raising awareness of the intersection of health and justice or injustice is the focus of a panel discussion and public forum presented by the Morrison-Novakovic Center for Faith and Public Policy at Davis & Elkins College. The Health and Justice Symposium will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday in The Joni and Buck Smith Arts Forum in Myles Center for the Arts on the College campus.

The panel will also propose some intermediate solutions, and a question-and-answer session will follow the discussion. The event is free and open to the public.

“We are the only advanced country that treats human health as a profit scheme instead of a common good or human right, and we spend substantially more money with worse health outcomes than any other advanced country,” said Director of the Morrison-Novakovic Center Dr. Bryan Wagoner, who also serves as associate professor of philosophy and religious studies at D&E.

Each panel member will approach the subject of health resource allocation from his or her disciplinary specialty.

Serving on the panel are Chair of the D&E Division of Business and Entrepreneurship and Professor of Business Dr. Carol Carter, Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Eric Castater, Professor of Economics Dr. Nadeem Khan, Professor of Nursing Dr. Denice Reese, Davis Medical Center Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Pam Smithson, Jivaka Wellness Center owner Kyle Weaner.

Davis & Elkins College students in attendance will have the opportunity to win gift certificates for the D&E Bookstore, Domino’s Pizza, Elkins Cinema 8 and Vintage Restaurant.

For additional information, call Wagoner at 304-637-1351 or email wagonerb@dewv.edu.
