New EPD officer sworn in

The Inter-Mountain photo by Brad Johnson Elkins Police Chief Glenn Galloway, right, congratulates Dustin George, who was sworn in as a new officer during Thursday’s Elkins City Council meeting.

ELKINS — A new Elkins Police Department officer was sworn in during Thursday’s Elkins City Council meeting.

Chief Glenn Galloway introduced Dustin George to city officials, and George was then sworn in by City Clerk Jessica Sutton.

George is a 2013 graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. He has worked for Armstrong Flooring in Beverly for the past five years.

“Recently he started applying to police departments in the area, in the state, and one was Elkins Police Department,” Galloway said during the meeting. “He was actually in the process of being considered for two larger police departments in the state of West Virginia, and he went ahead and withdrew from them to accept the Elkins job here.

“He said one of the reasons for that is because he knew a lot of Elkins police officers, the present ones and the past,” the chief said. “He thought he would be more interested in serving the Elkins community.”

On Oct. 10, Dylan Coffman was sworn in as an EPD officer during a special call City Council meeting.

Also during Thursday’s meeting:

• Mayor Van Broughton noted that tickets for the Taste of the Highlands event set for 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Phil Gainer Community Center are sold out.

“Not bad for a first-year event,” Broughton said.

Taste of the Highlands is sponsored by Elkins Main Street and will feature multiple vendors, including restaurants and catering groups, presenting their food.

• Broughton listed several Veterans Day activities scheduled for the city.

A Veterans Day parade will take place downtown on Davis Avenue from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10.

On Sunday, Nov. 11, a Veterans Day ceremony will be offered at the Veteran’s Memorial in Elkins at 11 a.m. Broughton and others will speak at the ceremony.

The city of Elkins will celebrate the Veterans Day holiday on Monday, Nov. 12. City Hall will be closed that day.

The next city council meeting will be 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at City Hall.
