New faces to appear on Elkins ballot

ELKINS — While the filing period for Elkins City Council seats and Elkins Mayor didn’t officially end until midnight, it was confirmed Friday afternoon that some new faces are taking their shot at council seats.

As of the end of Elkins City Hall business hours Friday — approximately 4:30 p.m. — incumbent Elkins Mayor Van Broughton was running unopposed.

Broughton is seeking his fourth two-year term.

Incumbent First Ward Councilman Bob Woolwine will be facing competition from Phillips Kolsun and former Elkins mayor and council member Judy Guye-Swanson. If re-elected, this will be the third, four-year term for Woolwine, who was originally appointed mid-term to the position.

Second Ward Council incumbent Gene Ochsendorf had not re-filed as of 4:30 p.m. Friday; however, Carrie Shupp and Michael Hinchman have filed for the position.

Chris Lowther, who was appointed mid-term to the Third Ward Councilman seat, was running unopposed in his bid for re-election as of Friday afternoon.

Similarly, incumbent Fourth Ward Councilwoman Marilynn Cuonzo had no competition heading into the official close of the filing period. If re-elected, this will be the third, four-year term for Cuonzo, who was originally appointed mid-term to the position.

In the Fifth Ward Council race, incumbent Linda Vest is being challenged by Robin Spicer, Joe Sabatino and Howard Knapp II.

The above named individuals are those who filed as of 4:30 p.m. Friday. City Hall staff will know by Monday whether any additional city residents will be on the ballot, as the filing period did not officially close until midnight Friday.

The Elkins municipal election will take place March 5 at Elkins City Hall.
