Police investigating shooting death

ELKINS — The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting death that took place Sunday afternoon.

Randolph County Sheriff Mark T. Brady said deputies were called to a Gum Road residence, near Elkins, at about 12:31 p.m. Sunday afternoon after a shooting was reported.

“I can tell you the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a call on Gum Road of a shooting. Upon arrival the deputies, along with the state police and the city police, located a male subject that was deceased in the residence,” Brady said.

Brady confirmed the victim to be Spencer C. Zoller, 49.

A motive for the shooting is unclear at this point, according to Brady; however, he said the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

“The victim passed away of a gunshot wound,” Brady said. “There is not a suspect in custody at this time and it is still under investigation. We have contacted the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team. They have arrived on scene and are going to process the crime scene. The incident is being investigated as a homicide.”

Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. B.A. Talkington and Z.T. Pingley are investigating the incident. The West Virginia State Police, Elkins Police Department and Randolph County EMS are assisting.
