Post 29 to celebrate milestone
ELKINS — H.W. Daniels Post 29 will be celebrating the American Legion’s 100th birthday on Saturday, and the community is invited to join the party.
The event will feature a ham dinner and a special speaker. The social hour will begin at 5 p.m. and the dinner will start at 6 p.m.
The guest speaker will be veteran Mark Lanham.
Lanham, who graduated from Elkins High School, served in the U.S. Army from 1979 to 1982, and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August 1982, Guaranteed Infantry. He went to Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina.
Units that Lanham served in included 3rd Battalion 6th Marines. 1st Battalion 8th Marines and3rd Battalion 4th Marines.
He also served through Barracks Duty in Bangor, Washington; in the 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion; in Enlisted Instructor Company in Quantico, Virginia; and as a Marine Corps recruiter.
Lanham also served as Operations Chief for the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia.
Medals Lanham has earned include: Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Emirate of Kuwait), Army Service Ribbon, and the Army Reserves Overseas Training Ribbon.
Lanham is currently the curator of special collections at Davis & Elkins College.
