West Virginia Trout Fest scheduled May 3-5
FRANKLIN — In order to feature fishing, Spring Fest pulled on “big boy” waders to be rebranded as the West Virginia Trout Fest to be held May 3-5 throughout the town.
This trout rodeo usually lures 300-500 fishermen who will bob bait this year for more than $2,400 in prizes for catching tagged fish (one a $1,000 fish) along two miles of the South Branch of the Potomac River.
Showcasing family fun as well as fishing, the three day festival also offers a boxcar derby, wine and hard cider tasting, a 5k and kids run, a fish dinner featuring outdoors guru Chris Lawrence, a kid’s care conservation area, a car and antique tractor show, a book sale, a flea market, food, live music and more.
The fishing rodeo is sanctioned and run by the rules of the Division of Natural Resources with golden trout, brown and rainbow trout provided by Sugar Grove Trophy Trout Farm and the Highland County based Virginia Trout Company.
Stream marshals will be present to clip tags from catch-and-release trout and register tag numbers along with the name of the angler to authenticate prize awards.
The Box Car Derby is for 6 to 13 year-old drivers in three age divisions who want to compete in pre-built box cars down a hill near the elementary school.
Kids should bring a bike helmet for safety, and wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt and closed-toe shoes. Prizes and trophies are awarded with a $50 grand prize.
