Woman admits embezzling $52K from water association
BUCKHANNON — A former employee of Mt. Hope Water Association admitted to embezzling $52,000 from the organization in Upshur County Circuit Court Friday.
Anita Wright, 50, of Adrian, represented by attorney Hunter Simmons, pleaded guilty through an information to embezzlement, a felony, before Judge Jake Reger.
“I took cash money from Mt. Hope Water Association and I was supposed to make the deposits,” she said.
Wright said she did not know the exact amount taken but admitted the embezzlement occurred between November 2016 and November 2018. As secretary/treasurer, Wright said she was supposed to take the money to the bank.
Prosecuting attorney David Godwin said the amount of money determined to be embezzled by Wright is based on the work of an accountant.
Wright has requested a presentence investigation.
Under the plea agreement, the state will recommend that the sentence be suspended and that she be granted probation.
Reger set sentencing for July 3 at 10:15 a.m. and released Wright under personal recognizance bond.
