DOH renovating area sidewalks
ELKINS — The West Virginia Department of Highways is working on making the sidewalks in four area counties handicap-accessible in order to meet federal ADA requirements.
In recent weeks, DOH crews have been very visible, working on sidewalks on Harrison Avenue in Elkins.
“This is a project for the Highway Department to have our sidewalks meet federal ADA accessibility requirements,” said DOH construction engineer Steven G. Schumacher. “So, we are installing handicap-accessible ramps along our highway system in Randolph County, Tucker County, Pendleton County and Pocahontas County.
“The job here in Elkins consists of contractor work going in Randolph and Tucker counties,” Schumacher said. “In the town of Elkins, we are working on sidewalks for Harrison Avenue, Randolph Avenue, 11th Street and Worth Avenue.
“There is a total of 88 sites in Elkins city limits that we are doing,” he said.
The contractor for the “design build” project is Oval Construction Company out of Charleston. The Department of Highways selected the sites that did not meet the federal guidelines, and consultant company Mott and MacDonald in Charleston designs the type of ramp for each site.
