44th Barbour County Fair offering new events

PHILIPPI — The 44th annual Barbour County Fair is asking the public to “saddle up” for new events and old favorites starting next week.

The fair, featuring this year’s theme “Saddle Up,” will begin Saturday, Aug. 24 and run through Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Barbour County Fairgrounds.

New events this year include a Cornhole Tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, a Lawn Mower Demolition Derby at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, and the Dino-Roar Show performing at various times from Tuesday, Aug. 27 to Saturday, Aug. 31.

Music, as always, will play a big part in this year’s fair.

Nashville recording artist Hardy will perform Thursday, Aug. 29. Local musician Gracie Metheny and country music stars Shenandoah will be in concert Friday, Aug. 30.

The Ducain Band will open for Kiss tribute band Dressed to Kill on Saturday, Aug. 31.

A Grand Feature Parade will kick off at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26. A Demolition Derby will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28. The Draft Horse Show will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30.

Commercial and competitive exhibits will also be offered throughout the week.

“The Barbour County Fair Association’s purpose is to provide Barbour County citizens an opportunity to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of a county fair that shall provide wholesome family recreation and entertainment; cooperate with the county commission; promote farming, industry, and business in Barbour County,; promote the sale of livestock and agricultural crops; and promote Barbour County’s way of life through culture, arts, crafts and more,” said Debbie Schoonover, the Barbour County Fair Association president.
