ELKINS — Today the public is invited to enjoy a traditional Highland Dance competition on the campus of Davis & Elkins College as part of the Mountain State Forest Festival’s annual festivities.

Katy Dillon, event organizer, said this year’s Highland Dance Competition has the largest turnout since the competition became part of the Forest Festival.

Dillon explained dancers will compete in the Highland Fling, Sword Dance and other traditional Highland dances — all of which are performed the same way all over the world.

All dancers will be judged based on their technique, timing, elevation and general deportment as they strive to perform each dance as perfectly as possible.

More than 60 participants, ranging in age from 4 years old to adult, have signed up to take part in this year’s event. In addition to local dancers, people from West Virginia, surrounding states and Canada will showcase their talents during the annual competition.

Primary, beginner and novice level dancers will begin competition at 10 a.m. at the D&E amphitheater. Following the morning session, advanced level dancers will begin competing at 1 p.m.

Dillon emphasized that students participating in the event have the opportunity to win small scholarships, cash awards and medals during the judging process.

She also added vendor tables will be set up during the duration of Saturday’s event including concessions provided by 1863 Appalachian Bistro.

Sponsors for this year’s event include Harris Family Chiropractic, Pro TV & Audio, Roy’s RV, Davis and Elkins College, Isaac Jackson Hotel, Friends of Highland Dance and DLF Consulting.

In case of rain, the event will be relocated to Elkins High School.
