Manchin says he spoke with Trump, looks forward to next talk

MORGANTOWN (AP) — Following press reports he’s being considered for Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet, West Virginia’s Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin says he spoke with Trump last week about the U.S. future and how to help his home state.

Manchin, in a statement Monday, says he assured Trump he’s “willing to work in a bipartisan manner to find common-sense solutions to the serious challenges we face.”

He says he looks forward to continuing the conversation with Trump later this week and public officials should put aside bipartisan politics.

Press reports citing unnamed sources say Trump’s team has been considering Manchin, a conservative Democrat, for energy secretary and secretary of state.

West Virginia has a troubled coal industry Trump has promised to help and large supplies of natural gas.
