Clyde Simmons

Clyde George Simmons, 89, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Friday evening, March 15, 2013, at his home. The family knew Clyde was holding on to see his great-grandson, Jesse Skidmore, and to hold his hand. This was Clyde’s wish and prayer. He then peacefully passed away surrounded by his granddaughter, Shellie and his caring neighbors, Rod and Robin and June and JoAnne Lambert.

He was born Dec. 17, 1923, at Huttonsville, a son of the late George Washington Simmons and Anna Mae Swecker Simmons.

On May 10, 1947, at Elkins, he was united in marriage to the former Naomi P. VanDevender, who preceded him in death June 8, 2011. They had celebrated 64 years of marriage.

Surviving are one daughter, Maureen “Reenie” Kittle and husband, Mike, of Harding; one brother, Fred Simmons and wife, Geraldine; one sister, Georgia Shiflett; and one sister-in-law, Lois Simmons, all of Elkins. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Shellie Skidmore of Weaver, Angela “Angie” Daniels and husband, Darian, of Beverly, Brandy Williams and Shana Simmons, both of Belington; and five great-grandchildren, Brianna Witek and Jesse Skidmore, both of Weaver, Lauren Rose Ray and Isabella Daniels, both of Beverly and Austin Williams of Belington.

Also preceding him in death were one son, Randall “Randy” Simmons; two brothers, Carl and Elden Simmons; one sister, Mary Simmons; one infant brother, Wilson Simmons; and one grandson-in-law, Mark Skidmore.

Clyde was a veteran of World War II, having served as a military policeman in the United States Army and traveled through many different countries and was discharged with honors. For many years he worked for Allegheny Lumber Co. and retired from Trussel Construction Co. Clyde loved to watch baseball, “Wheel of Fortune,” “Jeopardy” and “The Price Is Right” shows. He loved to go for walks and rides until last November when he began declining in health. He loved helping others and would do anything he could to help anyone. Several times a day he would take the time to thank the Lord for everything. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion of Elkins and a Methodist by faith.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Johnny Paul Williams II officiating. Interment will follow in American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program.
