Raymond Samples

Raymond H. Samples, 99, of Buckhannon, the Tennerton Community, died Friday, March 8, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He was born on July 15, 1913, in Crawford, a son of the late Amos and Orpha Loudin Samples.

He was united in marriage on Jan. 17, 1942, to Joy M. Snyder Samples, who survives.

Also surviving is one daughter, Charlotte A. Lewis of Buckhannon; three grandchildren: Sue-Anna Jenkins and husband, Charlie, Charla D. Lewis and fiance, Doug Maness, and Jerry Wayne (J.W.) Lewis II and fiance, Kristi Whitman, all of Burlington, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Dana Austin Lewis and Maddox Wood Lewis, both of Burlington; special niece and husband, Marie and Keith Cutright; and great nephew, David and Tera Cutright; great niece, Melanie Cutright; and several other nieces and nephews survive.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett and Waymen Samples; one sister, Mabel Douglas; one great-grandson, Kameron Lee Jenkins; two nephews, Jerry and Larry Samples; and also several other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Samples was the owner/operator of Sample’s Shoe Store and Repair Shop for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army/Air Corps. and he was a member of the American Legion Post 7. He was a charter member of the Tennerton Lions Club and also a member of the Tennerton United Methodist Church, where he served as church trustee, superintendent and a choir member.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospice and Dr. Clyde Mitchell for their care, kindness and support.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 14, 2013, from noon to 1 p.m., the funeral hour, at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel with Pastor Wease Day officiating. Interment will follow in the Buckhannon Memorial Park where the Buckhannon VFW Post 3663, the Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion, and the DAV Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors.
