Hazel Murphy

Hazel Georgia Keister Murphy, 97, a longtime resident of Parsons, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 30, 2013, in Envoy Nursing Home at Staunton, Va.

She was born Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1915, at Lanesville, a daughter of the late Isaac and Sarah Robey Keister.

She was married to Burton Harry Murphy, who preceded her in death Nov. 2, 1993.

Surviving are one son, Richard Murphy and wife, Barbara; one grandson, Richard Murphy Jr.; two granddaughters, Molly Hockaday and Amy Kirby; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were five brothers, Grover, Ole, Austin, Roy and Fred Keister; and six sisters, Mervie Keister, Kate Raines, Lona Long, Ratie Lipscomb, Lena Plauger and Evelyn Barr.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1932. During World War II, she was employed at the former Dorman Woolen Mill and later entered the federal civil service. Most of her career was spent in the Washington, D.C., area at various government agencies, and upon retirement in October of 1977, she returned to Parsons.

A memorial graveside service will be conducted Sunday, April 28, at 1:30 p.m. in Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows. The Rev. Phil Dent will officiate, and interment will follow.
