Billy D. Burnside, 77, of the Junior Burnside Road, Rock Cave, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at his home.
He was born on July 31, 1935, in Upshur County, a son of the late Doyle E. and Hettie Marie Davidson Burnside.
On Aug. 2, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carol Rice Burnside, who survives.
Also surviving are one sister, Betty Snyder and husband, Carl, of Rock Cave; and one brother, Don Burnside and wife, Bertha, of Rock Cave. In addition, Carol’s brother, Richard Rice, survives, whom Billy and Carol raised. Thirty nieces and nephews survive, of which many of them at some point called Uncle Bill and Aunt Carol’s home their home. Several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Marie Burnside; and three brothers, Robert, Basil and Junior Burnside.
Mr. Burnside was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Canaan Community Church where he served as a trustee and treasurer. He also was a member of Local Laborers Union 379 and Upshur County Retired School Employees. He was a long-time construction worker for Ben-Tom Corp.
The body will lie in state at Canaan Community Church today from 11 a.m. to noon, the funeral hour, with the Rev. Junior Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Canaan Cemetery where the Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military services.
