Howard R. Smith, 86, a former resident of Elkins and more recently a resident of Clarksburg, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital in Clarksburg.
He was born March 6, 1927, at Slaty Fork, a son of the late James W. and Letha VanPelt Smith.
He is survived by one son, James “Richard” Smith and wife, Sherry, of Elkins; two daughters, Linda “Lucy” Smith and Julie Schoonover, also of Elkins; three brothers, Roy Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., Thomas Smith and Arnie Smith, both of Huntington; and one sister, Geraldine Kisner of Stowe, Ohio. Also surviving are three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Army and was a building contractor prior to his retirement. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, the 40/8 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 410.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, at American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate, and full military honors will be accorded at the gravesite by members of West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
