Willa Walton

Willa Jean Woofter Walton, 80, died June 23, 2013, at her home in Camden, following an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 6, 1932, the seventh of nine children of Charles A. Woofter and Mary Jane Spencer Woofter. She grew up in the small community of Alum Bridge in Lewis County where farming, family and gospel music were a way of life.

Willa Jean married Clifford Lewis Walton from Troy on June 20, 1950. They shared their lives and created a family as they left the area, moving to Iowa and then later to Oklahoma. Willa Jean and her children returned to the Alum Bridge area after her husband died on May 22, 1962.

She dedicated her life to caring for others, first her family, neighbors and friends, then later earning her nursing certification, eventually retiring from Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She had a passion for family, children, nurturing others, the holidays and music. Those who knew Willa Jean appreciated her kindness, generosity and devotion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings, Bernice Klinger, Beulah Sleeth, Gladys Cromas, Chuck Woofter (Mary), Bob Woofter, Norval Woofter and Barbara Jo Kitch; and her close friend and sister-in-law, Bonnie Woofter.

Surviving are her children, Sandy Law of West Jefferson, Ohio, Sonja Putnam of Hurricane, Michael Walton of Camden, Jani Jones of Camden and Peggy Johnson (Mike) of Elkins; along with 10 grandchildren, Carri Catapano and the late Bob, Charity Pfost (John), Amelia Law, Adam Jones (Sarah), Johanna Cogar (Dustin), Ben Law (Amy), Charlie Putnam, Morgan Johnson, Delaney Johnson and Madison Jones.
