Genevieve Koontz

Mrs. Genevieve Biller Koontz, 101, a resident of Route 2 Box 273, Belington, departed this life Thursday, July 11, 2013, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins, following a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 18, 1912, in Montrose, a daughter of the late Marvin Johnson and Mattie Kelley Biller.

She was united in marriage Oct. 31, 1931, to Paul Gainer Koontz, who preceded her in death April 10, 1980.

She is survived by one daughter, Patty Roman and husband, Manuel “Manny,” of Bowie, Md.; two granddaughters, Karen Faye Ryon of Greenville, S.C., and Nancy Lynn Roman of Durham, N.C.; beloved nephew, Phillip Isaac Koontz, whom she raised; and one great-grandson, Justin Roman Ryon.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

Mrs. Koontz was preceded in death by eight siblings, Maggie Ramsey, Jacob Biller, Cecil Biller, Carrie Henline, Ersil Biller, Marguerite Bish, Shirley Biller and Bernard Biller.

Mrs. Koontz attended the schools of Barbour County; during World War II, she was employed as a Rosie the Riveter in Ohio; she was a farm wife and a homemaker. She was a member of Sugar Creek United Methodist Church in Belington and formerly a member of Lambert Chapel United Methodist Church. She loved gardening, canning, jigsaw puzzles and playing cards. Aunt Gen loved sitting on her porch and spending time with her family and friends. She was thought of as her family’s treasure.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington from 6 to 8 p.m. today and again Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. when final rites will then be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor James “Oz” Grey officiating. Interment will follow in Lambert Chapel Cemetery near Belington.
