Howard Johnson

Mr. Howard Lester “Bud” Johnson, 70, a resident of Route 2, Philippi, departed this life Thursday July 11, 2013, at his home. Death was sudden and unexpected.

He was born Feb. 12, 1943, at Washington, D.C., a son of the late Edward Ross and Alice Mae (Cunningham) Johnson. He was united in marriage at Wheaton, Md., on June 25, 1964, to the former Diana Lynn Hilton for 49 years, who resides at their home in Philippi.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Ann Vicchio and husband, Dom, of Freeland, Md., and Rebecca Lynn Kropf and husband, Alan, of Philippi; two brothers, Edward Ross Johnson of Delaware and Lester Thomas Johnson of Stevensville, Md.; and one sister, Alice Mae Zickafoose of Hedgesville; 10 grandchildren, Kenneth, Korey, Rachel and Rebekah Posey, Conner, Dylan, Evalynne, and Fayth Kropf, Stephen and Emma Vicchio; and great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Aislynn, Gavin, Rayniah and Rahnelle Posey.

Mr. Johnson attended the schools of Bladensburg, Md. He retired from the Washington Post newspaper, where he worked as a painter in the carpenter shop. He was a member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church in Tacy and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Bud was a member of National Wild Turkey Federation, National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, Painters and Engineers Union and was an avid hunter, fisherman and all-around outdoorsman, and a very proud grandfather.

Friends will be received from Talbott Funeral Home in Belington today from 5 to 7 p.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor Julie Dean officiating. Chapel services will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, July 17 in the Fort Lincoln Cemetery at Brentwood, Md. Interment will follow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Wild Turkey In-Memory donation to the NWTF Development Department National Wild Turkey Federation P.O. Box 530 Edgefield, SC 29824.
