B. William Vanorsdale

B. William “Bill” Vanorsdale, 94 years young, departed this life to be with his Lord, Wednesday Aug. 7, 2013. He was cared for at home during his last days, but was in relatively good health prior. He was born Feb. 7, 1919, in Berkeley Springs, a son of the late Frank and Laura Breighner Vanorsdale. On Feb. 7, 1940, he married the “love of his life,” Mary Alice Lord who preceded him in death Oct. 19, 2009. They shared 69 wonderful years together.

To complete their family, they adopted a daughter, Cynda Vanorsdale, who resides in Boise, Idaho, with her partner, M.L. Smith.

Also surviving is one sister, Rilla McCoy; nieces, Paula McCoy, Vanna Vignola and Dulce Vanorsdale; a half-brother, Fred and three half-sisters, Frances, Della, and Beuah. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Charles, a half-brother, Virgil, and a niece, who was like a daughter, Libby Edmundson.

Bill served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for three years. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. During his 39-year career with the U.S. Forest Service, while on the job, he survived the Petersburg Flood of 1949. He retired in 1979. He coordinated and assisted the Senior Center IRS Tax Aide Program from 1983 to 2006. He was presented with the “Point of Light” award in 1993 in recognition of his service to the community.

It was his pleasure to serve as a Commissioner on the board of the Elkins Housing Authority from 1985 until his passing. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church since moving to Elkins in 1966.

Bill was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason for 60 years and a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Monday, Aug. 12, Mr. Vanorsdale will be moved to the First United Methodist Church, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and Rev. Dallas Forren will officiate, and interment will follow at 1 p.m. Monday in the Maple Hill Cemetery near Petersburg.

Masonic Rites will be accorded at the grave site by The Elkins Lodge No 108 AF & AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care Corporation, P.O.
