Carolyn J. Leach

Carolyn J. Leach died at home in Green Bank on Monday, July 29, 2013, and left to rejoin her husband in the graces of God. She was 88.

She was a graduate of James Madison College in Harrisonburg, Va.; and later obtained her master’s degree in English and Education at West Virginia University.

Carolyn taught school for 40 years, with the greatest part of her tenure in Pocahontas County. Her career took her as a new teacher in Sissonville, teaching high school English, Latin and Spanish to returning WWII veterans and later spanned to include Green Bank High School, Pocahontas County High School, Durbin Elementary School and Green Bank Middle school. She was a member of the First Baptist Church Huntersville; and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 124.

Carolyn was best known for her candor, wit and stoicism. Those that knew her knew what a strong person she had always been and will never forget her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Noah H. “Sid” Reese; mother, Mary “Ethyl” Grimes Reese; her husband, Samuel Kenton Leach, a WWII USAC veteran; and her daughter, Mary Ann Leach Sewell Mulligan.

She is survived by two sons; Samuel K. “Sam” or “Kent” Leach, Jr., a Vietnam-era veteran, U.S. Navy veteran; and Charles P. “Pat” Leach, U.S. Air Force veteran; both of Elkins. Also surviving her are six grandchildren, George Bradley Sewell, Andrea Dawn Phillips, Holly Ann Sewell, Daniel Kenton Leach, Adam Daniel Sewell, Steven Patrick Leach. Also surviving her are nine great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Leach’s viewing will be held at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, 2013; to be followed by funeral services 11 a.m. on Saturday. She will be interred in the Alderson Cemetery in Alderson next to her husband.
