Ralph E. Fortney, 66, a resident of Elkins, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at his home. Friends may call from 6-8 pm, Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11 from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Rick Price officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Elkins, where full military honors will be accorded at the gravesite by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care Corporation, P.O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520 in memory of Mr. Fortney.

Ralph E. Fortney, 66, a resident of Elkins, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at his home.

He was born Oct. 11, 1946, in Valley Head, a son of the late Ralph E. Fortney, Sr. and the late Ina Louk Fortney Gooden. On Dec. 24, 1966 in Elkins, he was married to Beverly Ann Cost who survives. Also surviving is one daughter, Marlene Fortney McCauley of Elkins, two brothers, Franklin Fortney of Gilman and Gail Simmons of Montrose and two sisters, Peggy Helen White of Elkins and Mary Alice Parsons, of Parsons.

Also surviving are two grandchildren, Cassandra Lynn White and Clinton Dale McCauley and two great-grandchildren, Kalaeb Gabriel McCauley and Paiden Renee McCauley. Also preceding him in death was one brother, Charles Fortney.

Mr. Fortney was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served during Vietnam where he received the National Defense and Vietnam Service Metals, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device and the M14 Rifle Expert Badge. He had worked as a heavy equipment operator for the West Virginia Department of Highways until his retirement and was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion.

He was an avid sportsman, had a deep love of nature, his horses and his motorcycles.
