Julia “Judy” Ellen Bender, 85, of Buckhannon went to be with the Lord Sept. 17, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born Nov. 29, 1927, in Braxton County, the daughter of the late Raymond and Bessie Ruth Skidmore Gillespie.
She was proceeded in death Sept. 6, 2001 by her husband, John Gordon Bender, whom she married July 9, 1946; brother, Paul Gillespie; and nephew, Bradley White.
Surviving are two daughters, Twila Edgell and husband, Ray, of Buckhannon and Brenda “Beni” Bender and companion, Dave Curry, of Buckhannon; sister, Thelma White and husband, Curtis, of Peeltree; brother, Larry Gillespie and wife, Loretta, of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Bev Barnett and husband, Josh, of Buckhannon; two great-grandchildren, Makena and Avery Barnett both of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
Judy was a homemaker and previous owner alongside her husband, John “Ben,” of Bender’s Sporting Goods in Buckhannon. She was a 55-year Community Educational Outreach Society member and attended Tallmansville Baptist Church. Judy enjoyed crocheting, singing and playing guitar with “Sundown,” working puzzles, spending time with family and friends.
Friends will be received from noon until 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Lewis and the Rev. Frank Spears officiating. Burial will follow in Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon.
