Mark Sheldon Buterbaugh
Mark Sheldon Buterbaugh, beloved son, brother, friend and father passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, in Frederick, Md.
He was surrounded with family and friends throughout his long battle with cancer. Mark lived life on his own terms, moving to West Virginia 25 years ago.
He lived in a cabin far into the woods, grew most of his own food, from foraging for mushrooms in the wild, to beekeeping, and making his own honey and mead.
A few of his numerous accomplishments included caving, biking and hiking, astronomy, designing Celtic art, tattooing and riding his beloved donkeys in the mountains.
His artistic achievements included being a talented dobro musician and teacher and Augusta instructor. He was renowned for making some of the finest acoustic instruments, finding just the right wood to make just the right sound. We’re all hoping they have dobros and donkeys wherever he goes after this lifetime. He will always be admired and remembered and terribly missed.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Randolph County Community Arts Center, 2 Park Street, Elkins, WV. In Mark’s memory, we have started a scholarship fund, hoping to give opportunity to others in the town he loved.
