Gertrude Shahan

Mrs. Gertrude Sheila (Saffle) Shahan, 85, a resident of Valley Furnace community in Barbour County, departed this life Saturday evening, Oct. 12, 2013, at her home. She had been in declining health for quite some time.

She was born May 30, 1928, at Belington, a daughter of the late Clifford Blaine and Rita Marie (Shahan) Saffle.

In December of 1991, she was united in marriage to Perry Alva Shahan, who survives at their residence.

She is survived by three stepchildren, Nina Miller, Kay Weaver and Bill Shahan, all of Philippi; and one sister, Ruby Wilson of Florida. Also surviving are several stepgrand- children and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Brenda Brown; three brothers, Andrew “Herb” Saffle, Jim Saffle and George Saffle; and one sister, Ann Shreve.

Mrs. Shahan had attended the schools of Barbour County. She was employed as a registered nurse at Broaddus Hospital from which she had retired, and after retirement, she had worked for The Good Samaritan Center in Belington. She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from noon until 9 p.m. today and again Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Downing Gregory officiating. Interment will follow in Barbour Memorial Cemetery near Belington.
