Joseph Peter (Sappo) Turek, 88, of Davis, departed this life on Oct. 11, 2013.
He was born April 3, 1925, in Benbush, a son of the late Peter Paul and Nellie Uchic Turek.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Thelma Turek; and four daughters, Carol Turek, Thomas, Debbie (Loman) James of The Villages, Fla., Judi Turek, New Martinsville, and Delores (Brad) Phillips, Thomas.
He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jarrod James, Kelly Sovine, Brian Reed, Matt Phillips, Stacy Robinson and Ashley Phillips; and 10 great-grandchildren, Royle Sovine, Kade Harrison, Lydia Sovine, Owen Phillips, Austin Robinson, Kyra Sovine, Logan Robinson, Luke Phillips Trevor Reed and Shane Reed.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Stanley, Walter, William, Fred, Johnny, Carl and Jack; and four sisters, Josie Wotring, Stella Povich, Helen Cook, and Mary Vincent. He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Breth.
He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He had a special place in his heart for two granddogs, “Molly,” departed, and “Libby.”
He worked and retired from Consol after 35 years in the mines. He was a member of Local 1058 of the United Mine Workers of America, District 31. After his retirement, he did a lot of odd jobs, mainly repairing lawn mowers. He was a kind, humble man, always willing to help others. He liked to hunt squirrels, listen and dance to polka music, and play his accordion.
Friends will be received at Hinkle Funeral Home, Saturday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct 13, at Hinkle Funeral Home with Rev. Neil Parsons officiating. Interment will follow in Davis Cemetery.
