Mrs. Freda Eureka (Thorne) Upton, 76, a resident of Hice Street, Belington, departed this life Wednesday evening, Nov. 6, 2013, at her residence following a short illness.
She was born Sept. 24, 1937, at Belington; she was the youngest daughter of the late Porter L. and Audra B. (Ervin) Thorne.
She was twice married, first to Frankie White and second on Dec. 23, 1961 to Darl “Gene” Upton, who preceded her in death Sept. 21, 1981.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Saville and husband, Bill, of Augusta; one granddaughter, Jennifer Evosevich and husband, Butch; one grandson, Adam Saville; one great-great-grandson, Kaleb, all of Augusta; two brothers, Franklin D. and Porter “Bud” Thorne; one sister, Arlene M. Kirby of Parkersburg; and also lots of loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Sarah Saville; eight brothers, Wilbur “Wib,” Doyle, Tommy, Melvin, Hartsell, Clarence, Willard “Bill” and Paul Thorne; and one sister, Areta “Sis” McDonald.
Mrs. Upton attended the Barbour County Schools and retired after 34 1/2 years as an evening store manager for Pantry Pride, Palm Beach, Fla. After 41 1/2 years, she returned to her home town of Belington in 2002, where she was previously employed at the Dollar General Store and lastly worked at the Belington Prescription Center as a cashier. She enjoyed cooking for her family, gardening, canning, crafts and quilting. She attended the Calvary Mission Church in Belington.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 5 to 9 p.m. today and again Saturday from 8 until 11 a.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Wayne Freeman and Pastor Howard Biller officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery near Philippi.
