The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today. At 6:30 p.m. today, a funeral service will be conducted with the Rev. Kevin Starcher officiating. Following the service, Mr. Rice’s request for cremation will be honored. Interment of the cremains will follow at a later date in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.

James Rice

James Nutter Rice, 90, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Friday evening, Dec. 13, 2013, in Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins, with his family at his side.

He was born Saturday, April 14, 1923, at Bridgeport, a son of the late Lewis Jordan and Florence Nutter Rice.

On Jan. 1, 1944, at Elkins, he was married to the former Barbara A. “Bobby” Tabscott, who survives. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Also surviving are four daughters, Joyce Hammer and husband, Mike, and Jo Snedegar, all of Tucson, Ariz., Beth Phillips and Barbara Giles and husband, Daniel, all of Elkins; two brothers, Donald Rice of Elkins and Robert Rice of Cherry Hill, N.J.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and special family friend, Bill Painter.

Preceding him in death were two sons-in-law, Eric Phillips and Dr. Maxwell Snedegar; five sisters and two brothers.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1941 as well as Potomac State College and West Virginia University with a degree in business administration. During his high school and college days, he lettered in football, basketball and track. He was an all-state high school basketball player in 1941 and was a member of the West Virginia University basketball team that played in the 1945 NIT tournament in New York. He was a football and basketball official for many years and was an assistant to Coach Frank Wimer. He was a member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years, where he served as a deacon. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a 50-year, life member of Elkins Lodge 1135 Benelvolent Protective Order of Elks and Elkins Lodge 108, A.F. & A.M, was a former member of H. W. Daniel’s Post 29 American Legion and the Kiwanis Club of Elkins. He taught typing, shorthand and bookkeeping, and his business career covered moe than 40 years as a business manager and controller. He retired from Canaan Valley Resort in 1986. In retirement, his main interest was being involved with his family, and he enjoyed golf and other sports.
