Zelma Virginia “Sissy” Currence, 88, a resident of Valley Bend, departed peacefully from this life at her home on Dec. 20, 2013, surrounded by her family.
She was born to Conard and Florence Tenney, of Hemlock, on May 22, 1925.

Sissy was an extraordinary woman. Her life was devoted to simple principles, the most important being her unwavering love of her family, friends and neighbors. She is best remembered working diligently tending her garden; its bounty harvested and meticulously preserved. The home she kept was warm and inviting. She was well-known as a thoughtful hostess and took great pride in never allowing a guest to leave without the comfort of a well-prepared meal.
Sissy and Carrol were very supportive of the continued growth of the Blue Rock United Methodist Church. They were lifelong members and provided substantial volunteer support for much of the church’s functions from 1950 through late 1970. Together, Carrol and Sissy nurtured and raised six children with immense pride. Through times of plenty and times of want, the guidance and compassion she exhibited was untiring.
