Alice Dawson Light, 85, of Light Chapel Road, Buckhannon, passed away at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, following several weeks of hospitalization, with her husband and daughter by her side. She fought a good fight and hoped to come home to her family, but has gone home to an even better place with no more pain or suffering, to reunite with her parents and other loved ones waiting for her with open arms.
She was born March 15, 1928, in Gassaway, a daughter of the late Roscoe Lynn Dawson and Meryle Dawson.
On March 19, 1954, she married the love of her life, Delmar Light, and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage.
She is survived by one daughter, Jody Light of Buckhannon; one sister, Joan George and husband, Ronnie, of Fuquay Varina, N.C.; stepson, Kim Gratton and wife, Patricia; two stepgrandsons, Shawn and Bradley Gratton of Mount Airy, Md.; two brothers-in-law, Exil Light and wife, Nelda, and Lancel Light and wife, Marie, all of Buckhannon; two sisters-in-law, Mona Lee Light of Weston and Connie Marie Light of Richmond, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Buchannon, and two sisters-in-law: Gaitha Hoover and Mavis Woody
Alice was co-owner and bookkeeper for Joalde Enterprises in Buckhannon. She was a member of Light Chapel Church, Farm Bureau Women’s Group and a past 4-H organizational leader volunteer. She was a wildlife enthusiast who enjoyed watching the birds, rabbits and deer that frequented her yard, and she had a special place in her heart for the beauty of cardinals. She leaves behind the legacy of being a fabulous cook, and her family and friends will greatly miss her recipes, always made with an extra special dash, pinch and smidgeon of love.
Alice’s request for cremation has been honored, and her family will have a celebration of life service at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy may be sent directly to the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Light Chapel Church at P.O. Box 241 Buckhannon WV 26201.
