Marjorie Cain

Marjorie Marie Cain, 96, of French Creek, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at her home. She was born on July 27, 1917, in Clearwater, Neb., to Oliver Morton Hays and Sylvia Nelson Hays.

At six weeks, she moved with her parents to Petersburg, Neb., where she lived and went through school. She lived in Petersburg until her marriage on Nov. 2, 1947, to John Davis Cain of West Virginia, who preceded her in death on July 17, 2012.

She and her husband had four children, Mark (Marianne) of Philadelphia, Pa., Warren (Jackie) of North Carolina, Sharon of Morgantown and Laird (Alice) of Buckhannon.

They had six grandchildren, Julie (Doyle Tenney), Savannah (Cody Servetas), Daniel, Patrick (LaVetta), Taylor and Logan; two step grandsons, Adam and Lance Grandis of Florida; and four great- grandchildren, Gavin and Kiara Tenney, Caleb Servetas and Zarek Cain.

Marjorie’s other relatives were in the Midwest and southern California, with nephews and nieces in Nebraska, West Virginia and Maryland.

Marjorie graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University at Lincoln and later attended summer schools at USC in Los Angeles, the University of Chicago, and the University of Denver.

She taught high school English and music at Carson, Nev., and at her home high school. She taught ninth grade English and 14 rooms of elementary music at Belen, N.M., and taught four years of high school English and journalism at Ely, Neb., for about eight years before marriage.

The Cains lived in southern West Virginia, Minford, Ohio, then returned to French Creek, where they built their present home. In retirement, they spent many years in Sarasota, Fla.

Both held many offices in the French Creek Methodist Church and later when it became the United Methodist Church. Marjorie was the church pianist and organist for many years, “retiring” when she was 88 but continuing to play special music occasionally. They also participated in other local community service. Throughout her life, Marjorie was active with church, Bible schools, youth Sunday school classes and special programs.
