Olen Charles Carpenter, 100, of French Creek, the Alton Community, died at the home of his grandson, Paul Hanline, on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, under the care of People’s Hospice.
He was born July 5, 1913, in Randolph County, a son of the late Roy Melvin and Ida Louella Hunt Carpenter. He was united in marriage on Oct. 4, 1931, to Iva Luemain Sines Carpenter, who preceded him in death on Aug. 12, 2003.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one grandson; two great-grandsons; two brothers, Doyle Carpenter and Willard Carpenter; and one sister, Avis Cowger.
He is survived by one son, Otto Carpenter of French Creek; five daughters, Betty Wayts of Buckhannon, Katherine Hanline of French Creek, Rosemary Lee and husband Hubert Lee of Ohio, Fern Hoose of Ohio, and Linda Cutright Detamore and husband, Steve Detamore, of French Creek; 31 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Opal Page of Buckhannon and Dama Jean Stockard of Bridgeport; and two brothers, Hugh Daniel Carpenter of Ohio and Hub Carpenter of North Carolina.
Mr. Carpenter was a retired steel mill worker and was an avid farmer and cattleman.
Friends will be received at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, from 2-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at 1 p.m. from the funeral chapel with Pastor Don Elmer officiating. Interment will follow in the Indian Camp Cemetery.
