Onie Fansler

Mr. Lonnis Owen “Onie” Fansler, 81, a resident of the Crystal Springs Community, passed away Friday evening, Jan. 24, 2014, at his home.

He was born Sept. 11, 1932, in Elkins, a son of the late Lonnis Fansler and the late Gladys Ferguson Fansler.

On Feb. 14, 1959, he married Carol Anne Messer Fansler, who survives at Crystal Springs.

Also surviving are three sons, Lonnis Owen Fansler II and James Roland Fansler, both of Elkins, and Stanley Robert Fansler and wife Janie of Beckley; one brother, Robert Larry Fansler and wife, Lolita, of Manila, Philippines; and one sister, Donna Jean Harman and husband, Ervin, of Melbourne, Fla.; four grandchildren, Lauren Fansler, Hershey, Pa., Adam Fansler of Elkins and Morgantown, Hunter Fansler and Kacee Fansler, both of Beckley; and several cousins, nephews and nieces also survive.

Mr. Fansler was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1950 and a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was employed by the United States Forest Service, retiring with 30 of service. Following his retirement, he worked for Richard Doerr Construction. He was a commissioner for the Randolph County Housing Authority for 18 years and Chairman of the Board for Leadsville Public Service District for many years. In his younger years, Mr. Fansler played baseball and softball and later coached Babe Ruth baseball. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Crystal Springs Community Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Church Trustee for many years and a member of the church choir.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where full military honors will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
