Dixie Sou Singleton Jones, 77, a resident of Elkins, departed this life early Friday morning, Feb. 14, 2014, at the home of her sister, Exie Lou Irons, of Elkins, surrounded by her family.
She was born Sunday, Nov. 29, 1936, at Rosemont, Taylor County, a daughter of the late Tracy Gordon and Virginia Florence Lamb Singleton.
On May 8, 1990, at the First Baptist Church at Elkins, she was married to Leslie Carl Jones Jr., who preceded her in death Nov. 2, 2002.
Surviving are two brothers, Norman Edward Singleton and wife, Minnie, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Benson Loy “Ben” Singleton and wife, Janice, of Elkins; two sisters, Barbara Ellen Phillips of Belington and Exie Lou Irons of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of Belington High School with the class of 1954, attended Shenandoah College at Dayton, Va., where she received her certificate in business in 1955 and graduated from Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1960. She was a retired educator, having worked for the Frederick County, Md., Board of Education for 27 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church at Elkins.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5-8 p.m. Sunday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Monday, Feb. 17, at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Jim Murphy and the Rev. Linda Roberts will officiate, and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road.
