Emmel Alice Bennett, 91, of Circleville, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, in Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Va.
She was born on Hunting Ground, in Pendleton County, on May 15, 1922, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Alice (Warner) Zickefoose.
On Nov. 14, 1941, Emmel married Vivian E. Bennett, who preceded her in death on April 23, 1997.
Mrs. Bennett was a 1940 graduate of Circleville High School and a 1951 graduate of Davis & Elkins College. She was a school teacher for 39 years, having taught at Cherry Grove, Hinkle and Circleville Elementary schools. She retired in 1982. Emmel was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Pendleton County Retired Teachers Association, West Virginia Education Association, National Education Association, Alpha Shrine 19, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and Woodman of America. In 1973, she received the Outstanding Elementary Teacher Award. She was a member of Circleville Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and an elder.
Mrs. Bennett is survived by a son, Melvin A. Bennett and wife, Katheryn, of Harrisonburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Cecil Welcher of Grottoes, Va., and Melvin A. Bennett, Jr. of Verona, Va.; a great-granddaughter, Amy Welcher; a sister-in-law, Hazel Zickefoose of Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Emmel was preceded in death by, four brothers, Kermit, Bernard, Elmer and Edsel Zickefoose; and two sisters, Elva Z. Daniels and Ella Zickefoose.
Mrs. Bennett’s family will receive friends Sunday, Feb. 23, from 4-6 p.m. at Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Basagic Funeral Home, with Dr. Paul O’Gorek officiating. Interment will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.
