Ray R. Poling

Mr. Ray R. Poling, 93, a resident of Rt. 2 Philippi, went home to be with The Lord Saturday evening, Feb. 22, 2014, at 8 p.m. in the Colonial Place Care Facility at Elkins. He had been in declining health but death was unexpected.

He was born Jan. 19, 1921, at Tucker County, a son of the late Floyd Creed and Dicy Mae Phillips Poling.

On July 22, 1939, at Crellin, Md., he was united in marriage to Vonda Rose Howdershelt, who preceded him in death on Dec. 10, 2013.

He is survived by four children, Marie Williamson, of Parkersburg, David R. Poling and wife, Charlene, of Belington, Duane B. “Beaver” Poling and wife, Debbie Kaye, of Philippi, and Penny A. Gadd and husband, John of Elkins.

Also surviving are two grandchildren, Brad Poling and wife, Melissa, and Kelly White and husband, Robby; two great-grandchildren, Ariel S. Simons and husband, Daniel, and Aaron R. White. Additional survivors include, one brother, Harley Poling and wife, Mary Alice; and one sister, Juanita Martin. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by an infant granddaughter Shannon Marie Poling; and seven siblings, Dallas Poling, Chester Poling, Gay Righman, Dorsey Poling, Hazel Marsh, Tony Poling and Olive Shaffer.

Mr. Poling attended the schools of Barbour County and was a longtime cattle farmer. He had also worked for the Masketeers Corporation in Belington, and had formerly been employed by Barbour County schools as the transportation supervisor. Ray was a longtime member of the Central Chapel Church near Belington. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends and all who knew him.

Friends will be received from the Central Chapel United Methodist Church near Belington from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, and again from the church on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m., the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted at the church with the Rev. John Flynn and Rev. Kenny Kendall officiating. Interment will then follow in the Central Chapel Cemetery.
