Roger D. Summerfield
Mr. Roger Dale Summerfield Sr., 66, a resident of Belington, departed this life Saturday morning Feb. 22, 2014, at his residence following a period of declining health since June of 2013.
He was born July 11, 1947, at Tucker County, a son of the late Odis R. Summerfield and Bessie (Long) Summerfield.
On Sept. 3, 1968, he was united in marriage to the former Barbara Eileen Cross, who survives at their home in Belington. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Roger Dale Summerfield Jr., and wife, Amanda, of Philippi; two daughters: Bessie Yvonne “Sissy” Colvin, of Waynesburg, Pa., and Crystal Dawn Summerfield and companion, Matt Tacy, of Elkins; and his mother-in-law, Yvonne Cross, of Belington.
He is also survived by five grandsons, Jaron Freeman and wife, Rachel, JD Baldwin and companion, Shannon Everson, Riley Freeman, Isaiah Summerfield and Austin Summerfield; one granddaughter, Jaylen Rose Tacy; three great-grandchildren, Peyton, Paisley and Liam Freeman.
Sibling surviving includefour brothers, Lonnie Summerfield and wife, Rose, of Pennsylvania, Ben Summerfield of Philippi, Doyle Summerfield and wife, Jeanette, of Nestorville, Carl Summerfield of Beverly; two sisters, Rachel Gragg of Nestorville and Ruby Kisamore and husband, Danny, of Montrose. Several nieces and nephews and a whole host of friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Golden Summerfield, Jack Summerfield, Charlie Summerfield and Odis Summerfield; four sisters, Alberta Posten, Barbara Jean Steele, Freddie Triplett and Flora Jones.
Mr. Summerfield attended the schools of Barbour County and worked for the Department of Highways for 31 years.
He was an honorary member of the Belington Volunteer Fire Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed working with Mark Ryan at Ryan’s Repair and tinkering in his own garage on engines and doing repairs. Roger was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed hunting.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 5-9 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, and again on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. On Thursday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m., final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Donna Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in the Lambert Chapel Cemetery near Belington. Although flowers are being accepted, memorial contributions may also be made to the American Cancer Society PO.
