Mr. John Calvin Fridley, 88, a resident of the Corley Community near Belington, went home to be with the Lord 11:58 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014, in United Hospital Center at Clarksburg following a brief illness.
He was born July 7, 1925, at Philippi, a son of the late Gordon and Ola Fridley. He was twice married, first to the former Ida L. Poling Fridley, who preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2008. Second, on Jan. 14, 2012, he was married to the former Teresa Evans, who survives at their home near Belington.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jim Fridley and wife, Sherri, of Philippi; one daughter, Hilda Full Casey of Greensboro. N.C.; two stepsons, Robert Evans and wife, Shannon, of Belington; Eric Evans and wife, Melissa, of Clayton, Del.; one stepdaughter, Diane Poling and husband, Rick, of Philippi; and four step grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, Darl and Blaine Fridley of Philippi; Gordon Fridley of Clarksburg; and Russell Fridley of Madison; and one sister, Kathleen White of Bridgeport.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Miner Lee Fridley from Elkview.
Mr. Fridley was a graduate of Philippi High School and attended the Alderson-Broaddus College, was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Northern Africa and Italy during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was employed by the Kroger Co. for 38 years and retired as head produce clerk. Upon retirement, Mr. Fridley spent many years in volunteer work, first at Harts Chapel Christian Academy and then New Era Christian Academy ,where he served as a teacher’s assistant and volleyball coach. During the past 20 years, he faithfully volunteered at the Garden Market in Philippi as a cashier or in whatever capacity he was needed. He was a member of the Heart and Hand board of directors and of the American Legion Post No. 96 of Belington. Mr. Fridley was a founding member and elder of The Light of Christ Chapel in Belington. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him and those who had come to depend on his devoted service to God and his fellow man.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014, and again on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, from 8 to 11 a.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Pastor Jimmie E. Tallman and Pastor James “Oz” Gray officiating. Interment will follow in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery near Belington where full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post No. 96 of Belington and United States Army. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Heart and Hand Ministries P.O. Box 128, Philippi WV 26416.
