Betty Ruiz

Betty McCune Barker Ruiz, age 90, of Elkins, passed away on May 15, 2014. Betty was a former resident of Sutton and Ozark, Ala.

She was born April 10, 1924, in Gassaway, to Alfred and Dora McCune. Betty was the youngest of five McCune children, all of whom preceded her in death, Madge McCune, Jennings McCune, Carl McCune and Ida Stout.

She was married to Dr. Fred Barker of Sutton, who preceded her in death; and also married to Lee Ruiz of Corley, who also preceded her in death.

She is survived by children, Mark Barker and wife, Belinda, of Ozark, Ala., David Barker of Hedgesville, Robin Mams and husband, Frank, of Elkins and Mitch Barker and wife, Bobbie, of Sutton; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and by a loving therapy dog, LULU.

Betty was a World War II veteran serving in a military hospital on Long Island, N.Y., and on a transport ship carrying military families back to the United States from Germany, and England after the war. She was employed in Dr. Barker’s optometrist office until his death and then by Anwar Eye Centers in Sutton and War. Betty was a longtime member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Gassaway and embraced her church community with loving arms.

A memorial service will be conducted at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in June; a date and time to be announced later.
