James Sanford Coffman, 75, a resident of Elkins, passed away Wednesday evening, May 28, 2014, in Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins.
He was born Sept. 4, 1938, at Belington, a son of the late Charles Graham Coffman and Gladys Griffith Coffman Ball.
He was twice married. He was formerly married, on July 24, 1976, to Ruth Roberts, who survives at Broadnax, Va. He also was married to the former Elsie Tanner, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, James S. Coffman Jr. and wife, April, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Christopher Coffman and wife, Kristy, of Elkins; one daughter, Sherri Freed and husband, Dwayne, of Orlando, Fla.; and one stepdaughter, Grace T. Burton and husband, Emmett, of Chesterfield, Va. Five grandsons, James S. Coffman III and Michael Coffman, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Corey Freed of Orlando, Fla., Andrew Coffman of Elkins and Brandon Walton of Petersburg, Va.; four granddaughters, Autumn Rowe and husband, Jeff, of Jacksonville, Fla., Cassie Bolton and husband, Eric, of Orlando, Fla., and Katlyne and Serenity Coffman, both of Elkins; four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Caillyn Rowe, Joshlyn Freed and Hunter Bolton; one brother, William “Bud” Coffman of Elkins; one nephew and three nieces; and his dog, Oscar, also survive.
Preceding him in death was one brother, Charles “Sonny” Coffman.
Mr. Coffman was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1961 until 1964. He had worked as a loan officer in Pennsylvania and a service sales manager prior to being employed as a corrections officer for the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department until his retirement. He enjoyed his job as a correctional officer and felt if he could make a difference in one person’s life, his job was well done. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to read, watch television, and tell stories of his life.
Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Denzil Arbogast officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where presentation of the American flag will be made by members of West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program.
