John Smith III

John Moritz “Marty” Smith III, 63, of Pickens passed away at 1:21 a.m. on Thursday May 8, 2014, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a courageous journey with diabetes.

He was born in Baltimore on Feb. 4, 1951, a son of the late John Moritz Smith Jr. and Vivian Shirley Miles Smith, who lives in Williams Port, Md.

He first married Eleanor Huffman, who lives in Martinsburg. Then, on Oct. 9, 1993, he married the former Cecelia Coleman and they celebrated 20 years of marriage together.

His caring, fun-loving spirit will be carried on by his son, John Moritz Smith IV and companion, Amy Mereson, of Martinsburg; stepson, Terry Gordon Young and wife, Elizabeth, of Chambersburg Pa.; stepdaughter, Carol Michelle Young of Green Castle Pa.; 10 grandchildren; brother, Jeffrey Alan Smith and wife, Debbie, of Hagerstown Md.; sister, Deborah Ann Cline and husband, Howard, of Falling Waters; and his beloved chocolate lab, Trooper Smith.

Marty was a honored veteran of the U.S. Army and National Guard who served during the Vietnam era. He worked primarily as an electrician in maintenance departments of various companies, including Bindery Solutions. He was an active community volunteer, with a special place in his heart for the West Virginia Maple Syrup Festival, where he was affectionately known as “Norman the Doorman.” He enjoyed restoring cars and watching suspense thrillers. He was a faith-filled member of the Way of Holiness Church in Buckhannon who traveled on missionary trips to Mexico. He openly expressed his immense love and gratitude for his blessed life.

Marty’s request for cremation has been honored and his family invites you to join them for a Celebration of Life Service at 10 a.m. on Saturday May 17, 2014, at the Way of Holiness Church in Buckhannon with Pastor Jerry Murrell officiating.
