Raymond Summerfield

Mr. Raymond Edgar “Dutch” Summerfield, 90 years, a resident of Montrose, passed away Friday morning, May 23, 2014, in the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown from complications of heart surgery. He was born June 26, 1923, at Bowden, a son of the late Branson G. Summerfield and the late Grace C. Cooper Summerfield.

On May 29, 1970, at Oakland, Md., he was married to Nina Catherine Rexrode Summerfield who preceded him in death on Nov. 1, 2009. Surviving are step sons, Ralph E. Vandevender and wife, Faye; Roger Vandevender and wife, Alice; Richard Vandevender and wife, Merril; and Wayne Vandevender all of the Kerens area; one step-daughter, Diane Coberly and husband, Dave, of Montrose; one sister, Carolyn Elza of Montrose; seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; a niece, Glenda Balint; nephews, Branson Summerfield, Michael Summerfield, Richard Thrasher and Cecil Wright; several great-nieces and nephews including one special great-niece, Sandi Thrasher.

Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Glenn T. Summerfield, Billy Summerfield, Donald Summerfield; and one sister, Ruth Summerfield Thrasher.

“Dutch” attended the schools of Randolph County and was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Century Limestone prior to his retirement. He was a Christian by Faith and a member of Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, from the funeral home chapel. Pastor Kevin Gainer will officiate and interment will follow in the Elkins Memorial Gardens near Elkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Israel United Methodist Church, c/o Gail Kalar, 8283 Parsons Road, Montrose, WV 26283 in memory of “Dutch.”
