Fay Evans Conaway Cooper

Fay Evans Conaway Cooper, 92, a well-known business lady and a resident of Elkins, departed this life Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at Latrobe, Pa.

She was born Sunday, Oct. 23, 1921, at Terra Alta, a daughter of the late E.S. Evans and Emma Thomas Evans.

She was twice married. first to Charles C. Conaway and second to Martin L. “Red” Cooper, both of whom preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, C.C. “Bus” Conaway of Elkins; one daughter, Barbara Hinkle of Greensburg, Pa; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Teets, Jean Yester and Sue Gebhart.

She was a graduate of Terra Alta High School and West Virginia University with the class of 1942, with a Bachelor of Arts in music. After college, she worked as office manager for her father’s business. During World War II, she worked as a cryptographer for the United States Department of Defense. She, along with her husband, Charles Conaway, owned and operated the Ford Tractor Dealership and the Elkins Stockyards. During 1986, she received the Outstanding Business Woman BAB Award. She was a member and a volunteer for the AAUW and the Women’s Club of Elkins, and she sang in various choirs. She was a member of First Methodist Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church at Davis.

The family expresses gratitude for the love and care of all members of the Emeritus of Latrobe, Pa. community, who made the last five years of Fay’s life joyful.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home today from 6-8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Friday, Aug. 15, at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Dallas Forren will officiate, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.
