Velva C. Malcolm Austin

Velva C. Malcolm Austin, 86, of French Creek, went home to be with the Lord and join her many family and friends Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, in Crestview Manor Nursing Facility in Jane Lew.

She was born Nov. 13, 1927, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late Alva W. and Lenora Heavner


She was united in marriage to Carroll Austin in 1957, who preceded her in death in 1974.

She is survived by one sister, Mary Ann Malcolm Griffin and husband, Pastor Mitchell L. Griffin III, of French Creek; sister-in-law, Maxine McClain Malcolm of French Creek; daughter-in-law, Beth Austin of Casnovia, Mich.; 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren, all of Michigan; a special granddaughter, Christel and husband, Nolan Moyers, and grandson and family of West Virginia; and very special friends, Vickie McClain and Margaret Johnson.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Olin G. Malcomb and Noel Malcolm; one sister, Zola Malcolm Karickhoff; children, Donald Austin, Joan and husband, Richard Reed, and Geraldine “Geri” and husband, James Van Koevering; and three sisters-in-law, Hazel Burr Malcolm, Letha Lynch Malcomb and Naomi


Mrs. Austin was a 1946 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School. She moved to Washington, D.C., in 1952, where she was employed by the American Bank as a cashier until 1956, when she joined the staff of Rudolph and West Industrial Hardware, where she worked in sales and management until her retirement in 1990.

She was an active member of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches in Rockville, Md., and later in Laurel, Md., and held many offices, but was happiest working with children teaching Sunday school and AWANAs classes. Mrs. Austin and her husband were very active in many aspects of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches including starting new churches in the fast-growing Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Austin joined the Rock Cave Independent Baptist Church after returning to Upshur County in 1994.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 16, from 6-8 p.m. at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Rock Cave Independent Baptist Church with Pastor David Jessie, the Rev. Mitchell L. Griffin III and Eugene Helmick officiating. Interment will follow in Rock Cave Cemetery.
