William Strader

William S. Strader, 88, of Morgantown, died, Saturday Aug. 23, 2014, and went home to dwell with his Lord. He was born March 19, 1926, in Buckhannon, the eldest of 17 children of the late Huston Guy Strader and Alta Birchal Lance Strader.

Bill served as a Marine in WWII for 2 years in the South Pacific. From 1947 until 1950, he attended Western Pennsylvania Horological Watch Making School in Pittsburgh. In 1951 he joined the West Virginia State Police Department, serving in St. Mary’s, Clarksburg, New Martinsville, Charleston, Moundsville, Hinton, Winfield, Sutton and Morgantown, where he retired after 25 years. Upon retiring, he became Director of Public Safety at WVU for 18 years.

He was a member of AF & AM Lodge No. 9, a 32nd degree Master Mason, member of the Scottish Rite of Wheeling and a member of Osiris Temple in Wheeling. He was a member of Johnson Chapel Church for 25 years and most recently of Community United Methodist Church.

Bill continued to do clock repair, carving and wood working until his death. He and Bonnie spent winters in Arizona or Florida for many years. Bill had struggled with heart failure the past year; having had heart bypass surgery 20 years ago. The family wishes to thank medical personnel at the West Virginia Heart Institute, especially Dr. Jain, Lisa Henry and the hospital staff during his hospital stays.

Bill married Emily “Bonnie” Lane Strader on Aug. 15, 1947, who survives. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children, Jeanne Strader; Stephen Strader; William Strader Jr. and wife, Doris; and Perry Strader and wife, Lelah; grandchildren, David Dalton and wife, Kristina; Bonnie Strader; Stephen Dalton; Richard Dalton and wife, Teri; Douglas Strader and wife, Amy; Huston Strader and wife, Jessica; Hannah Strader Bowser and husband, Matthew; Julianne Strader Ryland and husband, Curtis; Chase Strader and wife, Clarissa; Lydia Strader Williams and husband, Andrew; Isaac Strader; Jared Strader and wife, Nancy; Sarah Strader; Rachel Strader; Noah Strader; and Emily Strader; great-grandchildren, Maximillian Dalton DeMasi; Shasta Strader; Ben Dalton; Simon and Lucas Dalton (twins); Alexandria Dalton-Gieger; Isabella Dalton; Benjamin and Ainsley Strader (twins); Blue Strader; Makenna Grace Bowser; Wyatt Daniel Ryland; and Liam and Ana Strader; brother, Walter; and sisters, Jane, Judy, Dorothy, Jean, Carolyn, Vickie and Kay.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Franklin, Daniel, Edward Paul and Tommy; and sisters, Esther, Alice and Ruth.

Friends may call at McCulla Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at McCulla Funeral Home with Pastors Gary Helms and Bill Strader Jr. officiating.
