Barbara Ann Tabscott ‘Bobby’ Rice

Barbara Ann Tabscott “Bobby” Rice, 92, a resident of Elkins, departed this life early Thursday morning, Sept. 29, 2016, in Davis Medical Center at Elkins.

She was born Monday, July 21, 1924, at Elkins City Hospital at Elkins, a daughter of the late Floy Shaffer Tabscott Flora and stepfather, Guy T. Flora.

On Jan. 1, 1944, at Elkins, she was married to the former James Nutter Rice, who preceded her in death Dec. 13, 2013. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Also surviving are four daughters, Joyce Hammer and husband, Mike, and Jo Snedegar, all of Tucson, Ariz., Beth Phillips Painter and husband, Bill, and Barbara Giles and husband, Daniel, all of Elkins; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Ernest Edmond Tabscott Jr. and Jackson Curtis Tabscott; two sons-in-law, Eric W. “Rick” Phillips and Dr. Maxwell B. Snedegar; and a special beloved aunt, “Auntie” Hazel Moore.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1942, where she was active in several clubs and the marching band. She was a wife, homemaker and mother and was active in the PTA and the Band Auxiliary while her four daughters were in Junior High and High School. She was a former member of the Davis Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1933. One of her biggest joys was her family. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, making most of her daughters’ clothing.

Mrs. Rice’s request for cremation was honored. A graveside service and inurnment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins at a later date with the Rev. Kevin Starcher officiating.
